PCA
PCA (Pyrrolidone Carboxylic Acid) is a natural amino acid derivative that functions as a humectant. It works by attracting water from the surrounding environment and locking it into the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin). By restoring natural moisture levels in the stratum corneum PCA can help skin appear brighter, fresher, and plumper.

PCA is often found alongside its mineral salt forms, such as sodium PCA, magnesium PCA, potassium PCA, and calcium PCA. These derivatives make up a large portion of the skin’s ‘Natural Moisturising Factor’ - a naturally occurring group of compounds that help regulate the moisture level in the skin.
